Facts & Figures 2020

March 11, 2020

Each year the Alzheimer’s Association publishes an updated book of statistics related to Alzheimer’s disease. It’s titled “Facts and Figures” and I rely upon the data quite heavily…it educates me so that I can share this information with you, it opens my eyes (and brings a few tears to them) with just how staggering a battle we have ahead, and it motivates me to “keep on keeping on” in the fight to end ALZ.

Click here for the new update: 2020 FACTS AND FIGURES

Over the next week, I will read the book cover to cover, but I know not everyone has the time or inclination to do that. Here is a video that points out some of the highlights.

I am also cutting/pasting/copying the board member email I received this morning from our Alzheimer’s Association Oklahoma Chapter CEO. I can’t improve upon Mark’s words as he points out what we need to know most, so here is his message:

Friends,

Each year, the Alzheimer’s Association releases a documented with updated statistics that shows the impact of Alzheimer’s and all other dementia. In 2020, that day is today. So, Happy Facts and Figures Day!

In this year’s Alzheimer’s Association 2020 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures report, we see continued growth in the prevalence of this public health issue. The numbers are staggering and increasing.

Here’s just a snapshot of some of the statistics that are spotlighted:

There are 67,000 Oklahomans living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

There are 226,000 unpaid family caregivers in our state.

In 2020, Alzheimer’s and dementia will cost $305 billion in our country. Thirty years from now, that annual cost could rise as high as $1.1 trillion.

The special report in this year’s Facts and Figures focuses on physician education. It reveals a need for dramatic change in health systems designed to enhance quality care and support for those with dementia.

A few supporting facts:

50% of primary care physicians believe the medical profession is not ready for the growing number of people with Alzheimer’s or other dementias.

82% of primary care physicians say they are on the front lines of providing dementia care.

In 2019, there were 28 practicing geriatricians in Oklahoma. In order to meet the Alzheimer’s population needs in our state by 2050, there must be a 511% increase in the number of geriatricians.

These are just a few of the jarring facts that reveal a need for dramatic progress in our mission…

How can you help?

It’s simple. Share the Facts and Figures with others.

This is THE public health threat of the 21st century and awareness is the first step in creating a world without Alzheimer’s and all other dementia.

Sincerely,
Mark

As I replied to Mark Fried this morning, I use the annual facts and figures almost daily in conversations and advocacy efforts. Yes, the statistics are staggering, but there is power in knowing and sharing them.

I hope you will join me in distributing the information. The easiest way is to “actively follow” the Alzheimer’s Association on social media by reposting and retweeting their videos and graphics for your sphere of influence to see.

Here are the Association’s links to get you started:

Thanks so much for your help – I just know that together we can end ALZ!

With love and hugs,

Ashli
