I love a $5 find!
This week I attended my church’s Wednesday morning ladies’ book study for the first time (try saying that 10 times, fast) – and I really liked it.
I’ve – at times – been resistant, hesitant, and even defensive about getting engaged with the church. Not because the people are unkind or unwelcoming! No, this hangup has always been exclusively my own issue. It’s one that stems back to a rejection long ago, one that I know the Lord wants me to forgive and forget, but one I still struggle with all the same.
But that’s a story for another time.
Today’s story is about the story that I picked up from the $5 shelf when I was at Mardel picking up my workbook for my church’s Wednesday morning ladies’ book study.
Book #2 for 2020 is The Captain’s Daughter by Jennifer Delamere.
I haven’t read anything by Jennifer Delamere before, and it’s been quite a while since I read any Christian fiction, but I was eager for a feel-good, quick read. On top of that, the cover caught my eye…you know, the very best reason to purchase something!
I have to say, it was exactly what I was looking for.
A lovely love story about two people who are doing their best to live by their faith, even when times get challenging. It wasn’t “too preachy” which I know sometimes happens in such a specific genre. But it was a nice reminder that God’s plan will take us precisely where we need to be when we are willing and obedient in following Him.
Delamere’s writing flows really well, making it very enjoyable to read. I often found myself smiling at the book as I made my way through the dialog…like when we talk to or laugh at the TV knowing full well that the characters can’t hear us.
I also like that it was readable in a day, albeit a day in which I didn’t accomplish too much else (like the Christmas un-decorating, the grocery shopping after being away for two full weeks, or the myriad of tasks on my MUST GET DONE LIST (this is the evil twin bother to my normal To Do List).
And don’t forget, it was a $5 bargain!
All in all, I give it a very solid 3 stars ***
I hope you all have a fabulous Friday and a spectacular weekend!!
With love and hugs,
Ashli

I just found your website after talking to my BFF Teresa Marler (she was telling me her exciting news about donating a quilt pattern to you). I’m a huge reader – having the library closed was agony for me – so I appreciate your reading lists. I read through them all and can’t wait to request some that I haven’t read yet! My other love is quilting, so I’ve enjoyed your whole website. My sweet Dad had dementia (probably undiagnosed Alzheimer’s) so I’m supportive of your “mission” as well. Thanks for all you are doing! Thank you for such sweet and encouraging words! It sound like we are kindred spirits 🙂 I’m sorry that your family went through the heartbreak of dementia, and I really do appreciate your support. I look forward to keeping in touch via the Internet!! Love and hugs, Ashli
