When I began practicing yoga 6 years ago, I discovered “yogalebrities” on Instagram. These are yogis who have found celebrity by sharing their poses, postures, classes, workshops, books, apparel, playlists, yoga studios, homes, family, friends, thoughts, and feelings. On the Internet, of course!
They receive tons and tons of accolades and an equal amount of criticism (but who doesn’t these days??).
Everything considered, I am usually in their fan clubs. As a new student to yoga, I was amazed by some of them – and I still am.
Seeing their posts was – and is – a source of both inspiration and education.
One of my favorite yogalebrities is Kino McGregor, owner of Miami Life Center and renown Ashtanga expert. She has a tremendous story, and she is extremely knowledgeable!
(Sidenote…I had an opportunity to practice at her studio in May of 2015, when I was traveling to American Conference football meetings with Coach.)
One way that Kino is active on Instagram is through monthly yoga challenges. She often hosts them with Kerri Verna, aka: Beach Yoga Girl, another awesome yogalebrity with a powerful story and a magnificent yoga practice. Kerri hosted the first challenge I ever tried back in May of 2014…#mayibeginyoga
I found that doing one posture each day was a terrific way to learn new poses and the perfect reminder to GET ON MY MAT every single day.
So I figured, what better way to get back to a consistent yoga routine after these past six months of knee replacement rehab?
Icing on the cake: Kino just happens to be hosting a very do-able challenge for September to promote her new book: #getyouryogaon
Today is Day 1: Adho Mukha Svanasana or Downward-Facing Dog
When people envision yoga, they often see Down Dog. It’s a great representative of yoga because it is a primary posture and, although it’s often called a “resting pose,” it is a very engaged pose with tremendous benefits.
Instead of simply taking a photo of today’s pose, I shot a short video. It’s about 10 minutes and a fun tutorial to help you get into the pose, explore it a little, and build upon it as you go.
I posted the video on my YouTube channel, and now that I figured out how to accomplish that, I will try to do a tutorial for each pose in the challenge.
Please don’t hesitate to holler at me with questions, there is no wrong question just as there is no perfect way to practice yoga because we are each uniquely and wonderfully made! Psalm 139:14
I’d love for you to join me on IG for the challenge, so please don’t be shy!
