I won’t quote the whole scene, but who doesn’t remember Kit and Viv discussing the pressure of a name…
Names are a big deal!
And just like our kids and our pets, I believe that every quilt deserves the perfect name. One that tells the unique story of that quilt, reflects the inspiration that created that quilt, and honors the love that went into that specific quilt.
Choosing a name is a rabbit hole that I could easily fall down and find myself stuck for a very long time, so when my niece recommended naming fundraising quilts for the person most connected to that project, I positively loved the idea!
So now that you know how I name my quilts, let me tell you about a quilt called…
Ms. Brenda
When I launched Quilt 2 End ALZ, Inc. in January of 2019, I decided that each year, a new block pattern will be created to celebrate and support The Longest Day® which is a volunteer-driven campaign that the Alzheimer’s Association uses to raise awareness and funds to #ENDALZ.
To go along with our theme for that year, the 2019 pattern is a traditional log cabin block that uses the Q2EA signature flower for its center square, the heart of the block.
To encourage pattern sales and promote my TLD workshop, I provided a complimentary pattern to local quilt shop owners and asked them to create a block using the pattern and then share their blocks on social media.
Brenda Shreve, owner of Red Barn Quilting in Barnsdall, Oklahoma made not one, not two, but four blocks for me.
It wasn’t the first gift she’s given Quilt 2 End ALZ.
She has been wonderfully generous with fabric that she was moving out of inventory as well as spools and spools of thread for piecing and quilting. Brenda taught me how to use a long arm sewing machine to stitch together the three layers of my quilts – the topper, the batting, and the backing – and she donated dozens of rental hours on her own long arm machines for me to finish Q2EA projects.
And when she mailed back her TLD blocks, she sent along her fabric scraps that I used in piecing her four blocks into a quilt:
Brenda has been a tremendous friend to Quilt 2 End ALZ, so I thought her project deserved to be the first fundraising quilt listed for sale in the Q2EA shop.
I can’t wait to reveal the full quilt – pieced, sandwiched, stitched, bound, washed, dried, and photographed – in just three more days!
With love and hugs,
Ashli
