This year the theme I chose for Quilt 2 End ALZ, Inc. is “Beauty in Color” and is intended to remind me that color – whether it be fabric, cars, houses, paint, dishes, hair, eyes, or skin – makes our world beautiful.
One way I am embracing the theme is with a “color of the month” to highlight in my quilting. To select a different color each month, I’ve jumped into the 2021 Monthly Color Challenge hosted by my friend and fellow quilt blogger, Jen Shaffer at Patterns by Jen.
Quilt #54
The 2021 Monthly Color Challenge is my 54th quilt to begin, and this is what my version will look like when it is finished in December:
Each row uses a combination of Jen’s color of the month and my own bonus designs as needed to complete the blocks for that row. An extra element of fun: Jen’s colors are inspired by a beautiful fruit or vegetable, so all the bloggers participating in the quilt-along are also sharing recipes using that month’s ingredient.
January: Eggplant
Jen started the year with the purple eggplant.
As I wrote in my business blog over at Quilt 2 End ALZ, this is the perfect color to kickoff the new year because it is the color of Alzheimer’s awareness, education, support, and advocacy!

In my layout, my purple row uses 9 blocks, so I created 4 blocks using the Color Challenge pattern and 5 blocks that were donated to Quilt 2 End ALZ as part of our fundraising campaign to support the Alzheimer’s Association for The Longest Day in 2019.
I think this was the perfect way to begin a year of very colorful quilting!
Since I don’t have a great eggplant recipe, I shared my recipe for my Super Simple Blackberry Cobbler which is one of my favorite purple foods: click here for the recipe 💜
Nothing accompanies homemade cobbler better than homemade ice cream, so you’ll want to have that as well: Lawson Family Ice Cream 🍦
Here’s to a tremendous ’21 – I wish you all the best, and I hope you will stay in touch and quilt along, read along, and yoga along with me all year long.
With love and hugs,
Ashli
