Angel Girl’s 5th grade class had a blast making these edible holiday crafts at their school Christmas party. Mrs. JR had the kids write their recipe cards the day before to conserve precious party minutes, and they selected their fabric square before beginning so there was not a bottleneck of backup at the end. We set up “stations” for each step of the jar building process, so the students took their jar and a canning funnel from station to station. I highly recommend that set-up with a large group…
As I was explaining the stations and steps involved in building their jars, one super cute kiddo said, “Why are we doing MATH at the Christmas party???” And I (being the eternal math geek that I am) replied, “Sweetie, math is EVERYWHERE in this world…even in scrumptious chocolate chip cookies!”
For this mom, the hand-written recipe card is the most valuable ingredient and a keepsake I’ll treasure year after year. You’ll see on Angel Girl’s that the recipe serves Santa, but with different fabric and a new recipe card, this is a great gift for any special occasion, like Valentine’s Day which is right around the corner 🙂
Christmas Cookies in a Jar
Ingredients:
- 1 + 2/3 cups all-purpose flour
- 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 3/4 cup butter
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
Instructions:
- Build your jar by packing the first 5 ingredients in the order listed above. It will be a tight fit, but that’s OK…that way the layers stay set.
- When ready to cook, heat oven to 375 degrees F.
- Empty your jar into a large bowl.
- In a separate bowl, combine butter, eggs, and vanilla.
- Beat those three ingredients until creamy.
- Add that to the dry mixture.
- Drop by tablespoonful onto an UNgreased cookie sheet.
- Bake in preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes.
