I’ve been enjoying an Egg in a Hole for breakfast since I was a sophomore in high school…which was a minute ago, for sure!
I had spent the night with my friend, Jennifer, and her mom made these for us in the morning. I was immediately hooked.
The pan-toasted bread and the fried egg are the perfect balance of salty and sweet with a nice dose of protein and a few carbs to get the day going strong.
Egg in a Hole is a weekend staple at our house, especially during the summer when Coach is home to cook breakfast.
As you’ll see in the final photo, my kiddos enjoy it with a couple of goodies and a cold jar of chocolate milk on the side…
Ingredients:
- Butter or Margarine
- One Slice of Bread
- One Egg
- Seasoning (Salt, Pepper, Season Salt…whatever you like)
Instructions:
- Butter your slice of bread.
- Cut the center out of your slice of bread. I use a small juice glass or a round cookie cutter, but a knife works just as well. I like to keep the center to toast in the skillet and serve on the side.
- Place bread, butter-side down, in a small skillet over medium heat.
- Crack the egg. I do this in a small bowl or measuring cup to be sure the egg is fresh and no shell fragments fall into it.
- Pour the egg into the center hole of the bread.
- Lightly season.
- Flip your Egg in a Hole to cook the other side.
- Lightly season again.
- Cook until the egg is done to your preference.
- Eat and enjoy!
I usually add a spoonful of strawberry jelly to the top of mine, which is very sweet and scrumptious.
Definitely give this one a try –
With love and hugs,
Ashli

I haven’t fixed these since my children were pre-school, decades ago. We loved them then, and now I will make them again in a new decade for just two of us.
