Egg in a Hole

January 22, 2021

I’ve been enjoying an Egg in a Hole for breakfast since I was a sophomore in high school…which was a minute ago, for sure!

I had spent the night with my friend, Jennifer, and her mom made these for us in the morning. I was immediately hooked.

The pan-toasted bread and the fried egg are the perfect balance of salty and sweet with a nice dose of protein and a few carbs to get the day going strong.

Egg in a Hole is a weekend staple at our house, especially during the summer when Coach is home to cook breakfast.

As you’ll see in the final photo, my kiddos enjoy it with a couple of goodies and a cold jar of chocolate milk on the side…

Ingredients:

  • Butter or Margarine
  • One Slice of Bread
  • One Egg
  • Seasoning (Salt, Pepper, Season Salt…whatever you like)
Egg in a Hole ingredients include butter (or margarine), a slice of bread, an egg, and salt pepper or seasoning of your choice.

Instructions:

  1. Butter your slice of bread.
Egg in a Hole Step 1 is to butter a slice of bread.

  1. Cut the center out of your slice of bread. I use a small juice glass or a round cookie cutter, but a knife works just as well. I like to keep the center to toast in the skillet and serve on the side.
Egg in a Hole Step 2 is to cut a hole in the center of your slice of bread. I like to keep the center to toast in the skillet and serve on the side.

  1. Place bread, butter-side down, in a small skillet over medium heat.
Egg in a Hole Step 3 is to place the bread, butter-side down, in a skillet over medium heat.

  1. Crack the egg. I do this in a small bowl or measuring cup to be sure the egg is fresh and no shell fragments fall into it.
Egg in a Hole Step 4 is to crack an egg in a small bowl or measuring cup to see that it is fresh and that there are not any shell fragments in it.

  1. Pour the egg into the center hole of the bread.
Egg in a Hole Step 5 is to pour the cracked egg into the hole in the center of the bread to fry in the skillet.

  1. Lightly season.
  2. Flip your Egg in a Hole to cook the other side.
Egg in a Hole Step 7 is to flip the bread to cook the other side.

  1. Lightly season again.
  2. Cook until the egg is done to your preference.
  3. Eat and enjoy!

I usually add a spoonful of strawberry jelly to the top of mine, which is very sweet and scrumptious.

Definitely give this one a try –

With love and hugs,

Ashli

I haven’t fixed these since my children were pre-school, decades ago. We loved them then, and now I will make them again in a new decade for just two of us.
